How much should I give?
There’s no right or wrong amount to give, but we’ve suggested some amounts with symbolic and meaningful importance.
If you’re interested in some SHF swag like a yard sign or tee shirt (pictured below)- we ask that you give at a level of greater than $10/ month or $50 one-time.
Consider a “real rent”.
Don’t own your home but pay a non-native landlord each month? Make monthly contribution of 5%, 10%, or 20% of that amount to SHF.
Consider the property tax that non-native government collects.

In Jefferson County, the average property tax is roughly 1% of property value (~$2,300 average in Louisville). Consider 1% of your home value. Even better, break up that amount into a monthly donation!
Is your home worth $250,000? Matching your government tax with this gift would be $208/ month. Giving 10% to the SHF would be about $20 per month.
Is this tax-deductible? (No!) Can it be? (Yes, it can!)
As of today we are a registered non-profit in the state of Kentucky but are not a 501c3 designated non-profit. This is, simply put, because reparations are not considered “charitable” within the allowable designations set forth by the IRS.
Given our relationships with the Tribes and representation by their Chiefs on our board of directors, we know the ways they use these funds to meet the “charitable” standards, i.e. language preservation, cultural education, Rematriation and protection of land, etc… That being said, we’re not interested in in setting the standards or expectations about how funds will be used. We will not give with strings attached and will never require reporting or audit how Tribal leadership designates these funds.
Similarly, the Shawnee have agreed not to ask for our reporting on the use of the land that was stolen by European colonists.
